There is a large selection of sunscreen available, and selecting one might seem a challenging and confusing task. Fortunately, it is easy to learn what to look for in a sunscreen product. Follow these basic rules:
- Always select a sunscreen with an SPF (Sun Protection Factor) of 15 or higher.
- Only buy a sunscreen that provides UVA and UVB protection. The sunscreen label should say "Broad Spectrum Protection" or "protects against UVA and UVB rays".
- Wear a sunscreen that is water resistant if you will be perspiring or if you will be in water, because wetness decreases sunscreen efficiency.
- Reapply your sunscreen every 40 minutes if you are being active outside (such as participating in a sport in or out of the water.)
- Reapply every 2 hours if you are simply going about a regular day, such as working, attending school, or running errands.
- If you notice a skin reaction to any sunscreen, discontinue the use of that product. Should you need help in selecting a sunscreen for your skin type, consult your physician.

How to apply sunscreen
- Apply sunscreen everyday, before you go outside, even if it is overcast.
- Use the equivalent of a quarter-sized squirt for each limb (each leg, arm...), your face and neck, and your back, chest and stomach if these areas are also exposed.
- If a quarter sized squirt seems like too much, don't worry, it will spread easily and evenly, and it will soak in quickly.
- Don't forget your ears, nose, neck, and the back of your hands. These areas are ALWAYS exposed!
